Hubertus Pohris
My name is Hubertus Pohris. I am an academic advisor and instructor in the fields of Tropical Silviculture, NTFPs and Agroforestry at the Technische Universität Dresden, Faculty of Forest-, Geo- and Hydro Sciences, Institute of International Forestry and Forest Products in Tharandt, Germany.
I am working as a staff member in the International Two-Year Full-Time MSc.-Study Programme “Tropical Forestry and Management” as Course combination supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the European MSc.-Study Programme in “Sustainable Tropical Forestry” (SUTROFOR) as well as in the German Study Programme “Forstwissenschaften”. In addition, I am integrated in the UNEP/UNESCO/BMU International Postgraduate Training Programme on Environmental Management for Developing and Emerging Countries of the Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) at the Technische Universität Dresden.
I am especially interested and experienced in (i) tropical forest plantation silviculture, (ii) tree planting for ecosystem rehabilitation, (iii) silviculture for natural forest management, (iv) silvicultural options for agroforestry systems, and NTFPs-management.
Accompanying the research work for MSc.-graduation procedures is mainly done in these fields on the basis of scientific work methods at all.

Jürgen Pretzsch
My name is Jürgen Pretzsch. I am Professor in Tropical Forestry with a main focus on socio-economics, forest culture and development theories. My Professorship is integrated in the Faculty of Forest- Geo- and Hydro Sciences of the Technische Universität Dresden. I am Director of the MSc. Course “Tropical Forestry and Management”, which is supported by various donors. We have university co-operations with many tropical countries. At present intensive research co-operation is ongoing with institutions in Vietnam, Ethiopia, Sudan, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru.
My research is focused on three levels: (I) Socio-economic and cultural diagnosis (Land use dynamics and forest development, Types of forest management and utilization - and their historical outline, Traditional knowledge systems, Forest enterprises analysis, Assessment of the policy framework of forest management), (II) Projection and modelling (SFM in a dynamic environment, Stability models for forest management, Acceptability of forest and tree-related production, Application of Farming Systems Analysis and Research to forestry and agroforestry) and (III) Orientation towards action (Forestry and agroforestry innovations, Planned social and technological change, Certification, quality control and monitoring as a learning process, Integrative forest sector planning, participatory planning and decision structures, strategic planning, monitoring and impact analysis in forest projects, Forest extension and adaptive co-management of forests).
There are three doctoral research groups which are integrated in my professorship. They deal with (I) Forest plantations; (II) Value added chains in forestry and induction of rural development (III) Climate change network in Latin America.
